Dry Mouth Creates Dental Problems!

Dry Mouth Creates Dental Problems!

Dental problems for older adults are part of the cycle of life. As seniors advance in age, so do their teeth, frequently, resulting in declining oral health. Here's one of the seniors' most common dental problems that can cause tooth loss.

A DRY MOUTH IS A DENTAL NIGHTMARE!

According to the American Dental Association, dry mouth in seniors is a leading cause of cavities and tooth loss. A dry mouth is not a normal part of aging for most people. Still, it is a side-effect of over 500 medications and from certain health conditions that are prevalent in older people such as diabetes, stroke, oral yeast infection, cancer therapy, Alzheimer's disease, autoimmune diseases such as Sjogren's syndrome, and HIV/AIDS. Snoring and breathing with your mouth open frequently also can contribute to a dry mouth.

The amount and kinds of medications we take frequently increase as we age. Thus, many seniors experience dry mouth, leading to premature tooth loss. This problem is one reason your dentist asks about any medications you take. We can help suggest remedies and treatments for dry mouth to help reduce its irritation of it and the risk of cavities. Dentists often recommend the following treatments:

  • Drink more water and stay hydrated
  • Change medications when possible to one that doesn't cause dry mouth and create a better dental environment. `
  • Use a moisturizing mouthwash that is created for dry mouth
  • Chew sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva production and exercise your jaw
  • Use a humidifier in your home
  • Moisturize your lips with lip balm
  • Avoid alcohol and coffee when possible
  • Avoid all tobacco and tobacco products
  • Avoid over-the-counter antihistamines and decongestants because they dry out your mucus membranes
  • Avoid sugary foods and candies (These increase the risk of tooth decay)
  • Avoid mouthwashes containing alcohol
