The History of the Manmade Smile

The History of the Manmade Smile

Throughout the ages, human beings have come up with many ways to improve their looks.  From the eyeliner created from kohl in the times of Cleopatra to the powdered faces of the middle ages and beyond, there have been cosmetic traditions since the Ancient Egyptians that enhance people’s looks.

However, one of the most practical and valuable inventions by humanity has been the creation of dentures.  Sure, we need teeth to chew some of our favorite foods.  Who doesn’t love munching and crunching on potato chips or even wasabi peas? Yet, one of the main reasons teeth are so important in our lives, and mental well-being is their ability to display emotions!

When we’re happy, we SMILE!

In addition to gold and gems, one of the most interesting archaeological finds is dentures.  Discovered as early as 2500 BC and found in today’s Mexico, and made from, what appears to be wolf teeth. The Etruscans of Italy used gold wire or bands to attach human and animal teeth around 700 BC. Two false teeth, made from bone, were found wrapped in gold wire in the ancient Egyptian tomb of El Gigel.

Clearly, the need and desire to show off your smile have been around for thousands of years!

Although we have a better handle on creating today’s smiles than they did back in the times of using animal teeth as replacement teeth, we still have another hurdle to overcome.  That would be the cost of professionally made denture.  Sure, they look great, but they also cost as much as a used car!
